Statement

Mere Things

I build my art around insignificancies; I turn them into simple movements. Movements like the falling of a nail, or the turning of a string are the starting places for my art. Using repurposed parts from everyday mechanical objects, I build around these movements, turning the mundane into a captivating artwork, while maintaining it’s simplicity. It is a back and forth struggle between my idea and function, looking and letting my art emerge, finished only when the work can stand on its own, experienced in motion, while maintaining a compelling composition.

I believe Art is like watching a feeling manifest into visual being, to be felt like steam, unconfined in the form of its definition. My art is to be felt. I try to get my audience to slow down, and experience the humanity of an artwork, and with my pieces, allude to their hearts. I believe in the good and beautiful, and in addition to creating visually pleasing works, hope that you can find a simple humanity in the making of these machines. They are all unique. This body of work, Mere Things, is an art about insignificance, built up from the refuse assembled thereof. It is when the work breathes more than its physicality that it becomes a work of art. With a sincere hand I have tried to create empathetic art, my mere expression of beauty.
